Как разновидность инвестиций, облигации относятся к категориям средне- и долгосрочных вложений — их покупают как минимум на 3–5 лет.
Имущественные права облигаций выше имущественных прав акций, поскольку в первую очередь осуществляются выплата процентов по облигациям и лишь после этого дивиденды по акциям. В случае ликвидации акционерного общества, в первую очередь при делении имущества удовлетворяются права владельцев облигаций, после выплаты всех долгов, оставшуюся часть распределяют между акционерами. Они служат дополнительным источником средств для эмитента. Часто их выпуск носит целевой характер — для финансирования конкретных программ или объектов, доход от которых в дальнейшем служит источником для выплаты дохода по облигациям. Владелец конвертируемых облигаций имеет право на определенных условиях обменять их на определенное количество акций того же эмитента.
